The Challenge: A Race Against Time in a Steel Labyrinth
A refinery turnaround (known as a Shutdown or TAR) is like open-heart surgery on an industrial plant. Every hour of downtime costs thousands of euros, and the time pressure is immense. It was in this environment that my team and I found ourselves, supporting a Polish specialized company performing maintenance work on the installations.
This was physically the most demanding assignment of my career. The work didn't take place in an air-conditioned room, but on multi-level scaffolding, in the heat, in full sun, and often during grueling night shifts. The main challenge was maintaining 100% communication precision amidst extreme fatigue and industrial noise.
Execution: The Interpreter as a 'Safety Guardian'
In a hazardous zone, there is no room for ambiguity. By definition, my team's role went beyond classic interpreting to include construction supervision duties. On the very first day, we all underwent training in this area, concluding with a test that verified both knowledge and language competence. This was indispensable, as translating instructions for valve assembly or pipeline welding had to go hand-in-hand with verifying safety procedures. Our work can be characterized as follows:
- Procedural Oversight: Translating and verifying Permits to Work (PTW) and Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) cards before every entry into the zone.
- Fieldwork: Constant presence with the fitters – from ground zero to the very top of distillation columns.
- Crisis Management: Instant reaction to unforeseen assembly difficulties and coordination with the turnaround management.
- Epidemic Threat: The project took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, and a new wave of the virus successively took down my team members. I arrived for a weekend shift as a replacement but had to stay a bit longer to fill the gaps.
Result: Success Paid for with Sweat
Although I personally spent less than two weeks on the installation, the intensity of this experience exceeded many multi-month office assignments. The project ended successfully, maintenance works proceeded according to schedule, and the unit was started up on time.
I bow down to my team, who remained on-site until the very end, coping with nuisance weather, the aftereffects of SARS-CoV-2 infections, and extreme exhaustion. Especially to Filip, who joined the team last and was thrown in at the deep end on day one – he was handed a walkie-talkie and had to instruct a Croatian crane operator who didn't speak a word of German.
